Smart Tools

FibroScan® is designed with a series of integrated Smart Tools to guide the operator through the process of probe selection, probe placement and measurement acquisition. These Smart tools are designed to minimize test procedure time and optimize test accuracy and consistency.

Quality liver assessments start with matching the right probe to the patient.

To optimize measurement accuracy, FibroScan® offers a range of probe models which match the measurement area to the patient’s morphology. By adjusting the measurement area relative to the distance of the liver below the skin’s surface, a consistent 3cm3 explored volume can be maintained. Using an integrated Probe Selection Tool, FibroScan® recommends the correct probe for each patient.

  • S+ Probe, Pediatric: Designed for smaller stature patients with a thoracic perimeter less than 75cm. Currently available on the FibroScan® 502 Touch only.
  • M+ Probe, Medium: Designed for adults in which the distance from the skin to the liver capsule is 25mm or less.
  • XL+ Probe, Extra Large: Designed for heavier weight adults in which the distance from the skin to the liver capsule is over 25mm.

FibroScan® Smart Tools provide visual cues which are designed to direct the operator through the examination in a time efficient, controlled manner.

When it comes to the FibroScan® examination itself, the visual cues are designed to direct the Echosens trained operator through the examination in a standardized manner.

Visual direction is provided to the Echosens Trained operator through a several tools and maps:

  • Automated Probe Selection tool recommends the probe best suited to the patient’s morphology.
  • Liver Targeting Tool helps select the optimal measurement point and characterizes the quality of the ultrasonic signal, alerting the operator when the examination volume falls outside of the desired part of the liver.
  • TM and A mode ultrasound display provides the operator with detailed signal quality feedback to assure optimal probe positioning.
  • Pressure Indicator Tool provides visual feedback on the applied pressure prior to taking the measurement. Additionally, the probe has an LCD ring that lights up when the proper pressure is applied to the patient skin.
  • Shear Wave Propagation Maps provide real time feedback on shear wave quality after each measurement is acquired.
  • Interquartile Range (IQR) feedback during data acquisition quantifies data variability across the acquired measurements.
  • Multiple Measurements assure optimal test accuracy, the FibroScan® test protocol requires a minimum of 10 measurements be acquired with an IQR/median ratio of 30% or less. Median values across the 10 acquired measurements are reported to minimize data variability effects.

FibroScan® Smart Tools provide visual cues which are designed to direct the operator through the examination in a time efficient, controlled manner.

Echosens Operator Training Program

Echosens provides comprehensive on-site operator training and certification programs which insure testing time efficiency and accuracy. Training services are provided by Echosens North America certified trainers. Typically requiring one day, the FibroScan® Operator Training program includes a didactic lecture on operating principles, testing skills and quality control measures. Following the lecture, operators perform a series of practice tests on volunteers while under trainer supervision. Trainers remain onsite to support patient testing startup activities. Trainees typically include physicians, physician assistants, nurses and medical assistants; sonographer certification is not needed because FibroScan® is not an ultrasound imaging technology.
